Environmental impact.  What are we doing?

Wood roofing is the only environmentally friendly material.  It is sustainable, because we can grow more:  plant a seed, grow a roof.  When the roofing material is treated with a fire retardant, it can last the life of the roof and extend the roof life.  Currently, a heavy shake roof can last 50 years without any additional preservation methods.  That has been certified by Underwriters Laboratories using the UL-790 ten year weathering test.  With preservation, it can last indefinitely.  Let's live smarter.  It is also excellent at shedding heat from the home, and is a very cool roof for summer conditions.   Wood stays cool, but other cool roofs may become hot a few years later as their surface changes with weathering, losing infrared reflection.

And what is the cost to our environment?
